Aurora Water Project On Havana Street Updates

2021 PRV Vault Improvements Project entails the replacement of the existing Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) vault between East 1^st and Alameda avenues, including piping, valves, flow meter, bypass line, electronic instrumentation and control components, HVAC and more. To improve accessibility and operational safety, the new vault will be moved out of Havana Street and into a utility easement adjacent to CommonGround Golf Course. Currently under construction, most of the work thus far has occurred in the easement; however, future traffic impacts will close part of Havana’s right lane and, separately, a portion of the median.

WC6-Alameda Storm Water Outfall Improvements will begin construction sometime in 2022. The trapezoidal open channel that extends from Westerly Creek Dam to Expo Park overtops during storm events and flows north to the CommonGround Golf Course. This project will impact Alameda Avenue and the intersection of Havana and Alameda. Added to this is WC16-Dakota Tributary Improvements for similar work on Moline Street, from East Dakota Avenue to Expo Park.

Kenton Way Culvert/Storm Water Improvements is currently in the project design phase. The work will involve improvements to the Westerly Creek Culvert at South Kenton Way and south of East Mississippi Avenue. Staff have been working closely with the owners of the Golden Corral on Kenton, regarding anticipated business impacts during construction and post-construction landscape restoration.

Westerly Creek/Canterbury Improvements Project (Canterbury Pond) is a Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) project with an Aurora Water component. Canterbury Park scored on the top tier for updating and renovation based on the PROS 2017 Capital Infrastructure Needs Survey. This park has not seen any updates in over 45 years, and it receives a tremendous amount of use from nearby residents. Likewise, Aurora Water identified the need for storm drainage improvements at the intersection of East Idaho Place and South Kenton Street that will require less maintenance and improve drainage. Storm water improvements will be achieved with the construction of new inlets, piping and an updated storm water outfall into the park’s pond. POROS is coordinating with Aurora Water so park and drainage infrastructure construction can occur simultaneously. This will minimize disruption and ensure the park’s closure will occur only once. This project will be located at Westerly Creek, between Florida and Mississippi avenues. Construction will begin in late 2021 or early 2022.
