The Colorado Legislature has introduced House Bill 23-1118 (Fair Workweek Employment Standards) — otherwise known as restrictive scheduling. This legislation has the potential to dramatically change the restaurant industry in Colorado and negatively impact restaurant workers by instituting devastating, burdensome requirements on restaurants.
This is the most restrictive such bill in the country. Read a bill summary here (English and Spanish).
We know that the prospect of this legislation is daunting for business owners — and workers — and we want to assure you that the CRA Government Affairs team has a clear plan to advocate for your businesses — but we need your help!
Below are things that you can do to take action on restrictive scheduling right now:
- Representative Judy Amabile, the Chair of the House Business Committee (where the bill is up for a vote on February 16) is hosting a town hall meeting on Monday, February 13 from 6 to 7 p.m. at eTown Hall (1535 Spruce St, Boulder). If you are located near the Boulder area, we strongly encourage you to attend this event to express your concerns with restrictive scheduling. RSVP here, and submit a question in advance here.
- Legislators have directly told us that they want to hear from more restaurant owners, and that calls are the most effective way to share your stories with them. Please call the following officials, who will vote on this bill in the Business Committee on Feb. 16; here are talking points to help you prepare for the conversation.
Judy Amabile (HD 49): 303-866-2578, [email protected]
Regina English (House District 17): 303-866-3069, [email protected]
William Lindstedt (HD 33): 303-866-4667, [email protected]
Tisha Mauro (HD 46): Email only at [email protected]
Naquetta Ricks (HD 40): 303-866-2944, [email protected]
Please call or write to them as soon as you can!
- If you cannot make a phone call, please email your House Representatives (both for your home and business) and tell them House Bill 23-1118 CANNOT become law in Colorado. (Note: Once you submit an email to the Reps for your home address, you’ll be redirected to a second campaign targeting the Reps for your business address. THANK YOU for taking the time to email both!)
- This bill will be heard in the House Business Committee on February 16, and we need a strong restaurant presence to testify before the committee. If you are interested in sharing your story, please reach out to us at [email protected].
Please take a minute RIGHT NOW to call your elected officials (or email them) and tell them how this will have a dramatic impact on your business and your employees!
