Road Construction Updates

Road Construction Updates
Posted on 05/24/2024
As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents, demands for more infrastructure, improvements and repairs also grow. On any given work day, there can be as many as 100 active work zones within the city.

Traffic engineering staff do make an effort to minimize the impact of these work zones to the traveling public. In addition to reviewing and approving the plans to ensure they are safe and compliant with all regulations, staff also work with contractors to seek alternatives to street closures and minimize the number of lane closures and their duration. Staff also try to keep conflicting work zones from overlapping in time or space. In most cases, these efforts are successful. However, on occasion, alternatives are not available and since we are dealing with the outdoor environment, even the best planned projects get delayed by weather, special events or unknown conditions, resulting in confusion and/or unplanned congestion.

Metro Water Recovery project may result in short-term road closures

As part of ongoing and routine wastewater treatment system maintenance, Metro Water Recovery is rehabilitating segments of corroded pipe within Aurora. The Aurora Westside Interceptor Rehabilitation Project is necessary to maintain about 23,000 feet of pipeline that runs from Parker Road and I-225 to Dayton Street and Smith Road.

The work performed by Inliner Solutions began in early September. Construction for this critical infrastructure will be limited to brief disturbances at 11 bypass locations. Short-term road closures and/or traffic detours may be needed along bypass pumping routes.

Affected locations in 2024 may be viewed on the project website.

East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit
The city and county of Denver, in partnership with RTD, the city of Aurora and CDOT, is moving forward with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on East Colfax Avenue. This project is intended to move more people more efficiently and more safely along the Colfax Corridor.

Based on available funding, construction is slated to begin in late-2024, with the system operating starting in 2027. Buses will run down center transit lanes in Denver and on side-running transit lanes in Aurora. The city of Aurora negotiated an intergovernmental agreement with Denver to fund the design and construction of BRT elements along the Aurora portion of Colfax.
