Rock It Sock It

The Rock It Sock It Sock Drive was launched in 2017 to address a vital need within the Aurora, Colorado community, while having fun doing it. Founding partners include the The Aurora Police Department, Aurora Chamber of Commerce, Medical Center of Aurora and The Summit Event Center. Held annually, the Sock Drive has donated 20k pairs of socks and 7k sock care kits to the Comitis Crisis Center for distribution to the many individuals it serves within the community.

Why are socks so important?

Socks provide a layer of warmth, worsened by smoking, which constricts blood vessels making toes more susceptible to damage by cold. Severe frostbite leads to amputation

Socks decrease friction between the shoes and the foot. Socks also help cushion the bottom of the foot. The friction leads to thickened skin. Many homeless people have a condition call polyneuropathy. They lose nerve function and cannot feel irritations of their feet. The thickened skin can then break down to an ulcer. Neuropathic ulcers usually become infected and can cause cellulitis (skin infection), deadly sepsis (blood poisoning) or deep bone infections.

The Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners published the results of a surgery of the utilization of foot care services among homeless adults. The results showed “An overwhelming number of respondents felt that the embarrassment associated with the smell of feet and the poor condition of their shoes and socks were deterrents in using available foot care services.

Providing clean, new socks help those in need to get one-step closer to health care.

What is the Comitis Crisis Center?

The Comitis Crisis Center, Inc. began operations in 1969 with an initial mission of providing alternative assistance to youth with substance abuse problems. Comitis was the first program to provide services in this Federal region for runaway youth in 1971. Today, Comitis offers a comprehensive program of services, from emergency housing, crisis intervention, short-term treatment, aftercare, outreach, and education and prevention services to Aurora persons ranging from infants to senior citizens. We are the resource in our community for the homeless, the near homeless and working poor. We are part of the Aurora’s “Cold Weather Alert” program working alongside Aurora Warms the Night, and the Aurora Police Department. We provide a place to stay and a range of material resources including food and general nutritional items, diapers, bus passes, and other resources that meet basic human needs. comitiscrisiscenter.org/comitis-crisis-center
